Hal Finney (1956-2014) was a pioneering cryptographer and a major contributor to the Bitcoin network. Known as the first recipient of a Bitcoin transaction from Satoshi Nakamoto, Finney played a key role in the early development and testing of the Bitcoin software. He died in 2014 from ALS.
