NASDAQ, short for the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations, is a global electronic marketplace for buying and selling securities, as well as the benchmark index for U.S. technology stocks. Founded in 1971, NASDAQ was the world's first electronic stock market and is now known for its high-tech, computerized trading system. NASDAQ is home to many of the biggest tech companies, including Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet (Google's parent company). It is particularly favored by technology and biotech firms. In addition to equities, NASDAQ also trades options, derivatives, and other financial instruments. The NASDAQ Composite is a widely followed stock market index that includes over 3,000 stocks listed on the NASDAQ exchange, most of which are technology and internet-related. It is a significant barometer of the performance of technology and growth companies.
